You can find hotels in Stintino
in our Sardinia Hotels website, please check links below.
These photos have been taken in Stintino, a little town on the sea side in the North West extreme
point of Sardinia, in the Sassari province.
There are several beaches in Stintino
area, on both east and west sides of the "finger" that extends
towards the islands Isola Piana and Asinara. Among them the Pelosa and the
Pelosetta, the Saline, the Coscia di Donna and Punta d' Elice beaches.
All the images in this page were taken on
the East side of the Sardinia "finger" tip looking to the nearby Isola
Piana
and Asinara islands.
Isola Piana, as the name tells, is a flat
island and is placed in between Stintino and Asinara. You can see both
islands in the Photos, with the nearest flat and lower Isola Piana and on the
background the mountains of the bigger Asinara.
Separated from la Pelosa beach by a tiny
channel but easy to reach, walking thorough the shallow waters, there is a
beautiful Spanish tower built in the 16th Century, testimony of the long
period when Sardinia was ruled by the Spanish Crown and defense needed
against corsair and other attacks coming from North Africa, France, Genoa,
Turkey.
Asinara island has an history on its own.
Due to its position and insularity it was first chosen to be the "Lazzaretto"
to place contagious patients and in more modern times to become the high
security prison which used to hold the most dangerous mafiosi and
terrorists of Italy. In 1998 the high security prison was abandoned and
the un-spoiled by humans Asinara could become a National Park. There among
other wild species is possible to admire the indigenous white donkeys.
Access to the National Park may not be granted due to the limited number
of visitors admitted.
To reach Stintino with a car is quite
easy. Alghero Fertilia is the nearest airport with lots of national and
international connections. Porto Torres is the nearest port with ferries
connection from Sardinia to Italy mainland and some connections to France as well.
Once in Sardinia you can access many services
to really enjoy the possibilities offered by Stintino, sailing, wind
surfing, scuba diving.
